Conservation & Restoration Services

Does your collection need a little TLC? I have nearly twenty years of experience stabilizing and restoring distressed books, maps, photos and ephemera. I am not an academically trained conservator, but I am well-schooled in best practices for stabilizing 19th and early 20th century paper and leather materials. My services in this area fall into two categories: · Conservation – Conservation involves stabilizing historical books, maps, photos or ephemera in order to stop damage from moisture, acidification, red rot, mildew, sunlight, soot, oil or other environmental factors. I do basic conservation using a number of techniques and products including various de-acidification products, Cellugel for leather, cleaning with the proper tools and solvents and applying UV protective barriers. · Restoration – Restoration involves structural and cosmetic repairs, such as mending tears, refastening book spines, restoring color to faded and water-damaged areas, tightening bindings, repairing fraying or chipping, removing modern library stamps, card pockets and spine labels, flattening rolled maps, de-creasing and framing. I only use acid-free archival grade materials, and I strive to preserve the original patina and historical appearance of objects I restore. I will not rebind an historical book but will instead attempt to repair and strengthen the existing binding. I will only work on 19th and 20th century materials of modest value. I specialize in book repair using the techniques taught at saveyourbooks.com. If your item is worth more than $1000 or is of substantial historical importance, I will refer you to a credentialed professional conservator. Examples of books I work on are 19th century leather bound county and regional histories and historical Great Lakes maps and charts from the 19th century.
