Research Services

I am one of the most experienced maritime history researchers on the Great Lakes and have written several books and hundreds of articles on topics ranging from early vessels to harbor histories to genealogy of maritime families.  I have located several notable lost ships through original research, and I regularly research the history and provenance of antiquities.  I have located several important historical documents that were previously unknown and have worked to digitize important historical materials.  I have created several online databases of Great Lakes vessel information, and I currently host the David Swayze Shipwreck Database, the Dr. Charles Feltner Great Lakes Enrollment Abstract Database and my own database of Great Lakes Vessel Accidents.  I have also worked with the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History to digitize a previously unavailable collection of over 8000 Great Lakes customs house shipwreck reports at the National Archives.  I have co-written five successful nominations to the National Register of Historic Places for Great Lakes shipwrecks and have researched for the National Geographic Channel, Science Channel and Wisconsin Public Television.

If you have a tough research problem, I’m happy to help.  My research services fall into a few main categories:

·       Quick Questions – If you need basic information on an obscure vessel, event, person or place, I can often find the information in minutes.  I do not charge for this level of service.

·       Detailed/Comprehensive Histories requiring Original Research – If you need documentation that spans several pages or you need original research in materials that are not readily available online, I am happy to offer an estimate for the work required.

Check out my most recent books.  They were written completely from original research in primary sources with no AI assistance.

·       Ghosts of the Oceana Coast: Pentwater Michigan’s Shipwreck Graveyard – A comprehensive history of over 60 lost ships in Oceana County, Michigan

·       Fathoms Deep but not Forgotten: Wisconsin’s Lost Ships – A comprehensive inventory of every vessel every lost or built in Southeast Wisconsin, including details on over 400 vessels

To discuss your research needs, email me at baillod@shipwreck.info.  For large projects, I may ask that we have a contractual agreement.
